Throughout the year our playground gardens provide us with amazing learning opportunities. We have been able to investigate the growing cycle of pumpkins and what happens to those plants when the first frost happens. The pictures below will illustrate our investigation of a fall garden here at Blanchard.
How does a pumpkin grow? Let our sketches show you.
SKETCHING the pumpkin plants
Do green pumpkins and orange pumpkins look different on the inside?
Tools we used to investigate the inside of pumpkins: Our senses ( seeing, hearing, smelling, touching) spoons and scoops, magnifying glasses, a sharp knife (teacher) bowls for collecting and counting seeds.
When the WEATHER changed.....
"The little pumpkin has a squishy spot."
"The big leaves are droopy and dark."
Getting the garden beds ready for WINTER and SPRING....
"We took out the dead plants and raked the dirt."
"We used teamwork to dig holes "
"Bulbs go in the holes 8" deep. We used a ruler to help us know how far to dig."
"We used the white cards to measure the SAME AMOUNT between each bulb"
"We covered the planted bulbs with a warm blanket of soil for the cold, cold winter."
" Look, we found a worn while we were digging."
Literature used to support our learning in class.
